Remember the famed Cracker Jack "find" that walked into the Cleveland National Convention back in 2004? Arguably the most significant find in baseball-card history? Complete with a pristine 1914 Cracker Jack set (Shoeless Joe graded SGC 98!) plus a large volume of other pre-war cards?
Well, also included in that treasure trove was a box containing this very silk premium, neatly folded up, which had not seen the light of day virtually since its production 90 years prior. So immaculate was its preservation that when our consignor framed the piece, he even resisted the urge to press it for fear of disturbing its original, natural state. Thus, it is by a large margin the finest example in existence—even superior to that which was offered in the 2010 Bill Mastro Collection auction.
Aesthetically, the large-sized, very scarce tobacco premium delivers the unified magic of the American pastime, its grandest personalities and the era depicted. In its layout, the images of Home Run Baker, Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson and Tris Speaker—all with individual, crimson-thread frame perimeter designs neatly imprinted at the factory—are majestically presented against a softly magnificent diamond-and-baseball-equipment background. The motif is ideal for its subjects and its intended household purpose, and it is a delight for the viewer of today. In the fashion of the era from which this premium originates, the five ballplayer portrayals are arranged on a square piece of off-white cloth (22" x 22" visible area). The object was conceived to act as a decorative outward-facing surface for a pillow, and was only available by mail-in offer as the grand premium from Helmar when hundreds of coupons were redeemed. In other words, a vast quantity of cigarettes had to be smoked in order to obtain one of these beauties! In the lower right corner, a printed "No.4" identifies the premium's place in a promotional offer that also included flags, Indians, Generals and other eye-catching themes. The lovely artifact fulfills, on a grandiose and glorious scale, the living room or formal-area projection that must have been most optimistically envisioned by its creators.
Near Mint condition with bold, vibrant colors, a startlingly clean surface, and picture-perfect portraits. Elegantly matted and framed to 28-1/4" x 28-1/4" total dimensions.
